If you work in the medical sector or if you are signed with a nurse agency then you may have heard about how much racism is present right now. If you work a nursing recruitment agency or if you work in care jobs, or with carers then you should know that racism could well be costing the NHS millions. it has a very big, corrosive effect on the workforce as well. At the NHS confederation, it would seem that clinical figures have been discussing the financial as well as the human cost of racism to patients and staff. This is especially the case within the healthcare service. Marie Gabriel has come out to say that right now, the level of racism cannot be measured and that more has to be done to make sure that this does not go on to affect the wellbeing of staff. Panellists have talked about how Asian, Black and other minority groups are now leaving the profession. A lot of this comes down to the racist and unnecessary experiences that they have had at work.
At the end of the day, racism has a huge effect on patient safety and it can also impact recruitment, workplace retention and more. Some might even go as far to say that it is starving the country and that people are being held back in terms of workplace progression. Yvonne Coghill who was once the director for the NHS Rally has said that when it comes to jeopardising the workplace, right now, this is the biggest risk and that is not good at all. Who knows what the future holds, but right now, it would seem that enough is not being done to support those who truly need it the most.
