RCM have showcased a huge variety of roles to midwives in an attempt to try and boost their potential. Midwives in Scotland are hoping to spread a message that midwives do more than just help women give birth. The Royal College of Midwives in Scotland are going to publish a booklet and this will explain that midwives work in a huge range of environments and this includes hospitals, the home and even the community as well. They also have a very important role when it comes to supporting public health and even equality as well. Those who work in nursing jobs or even in a nursing agency will understand this more than anyone. They have stated that a midwife’s work includes so much more than what you would think and it is designed to get policy makers to try and think about what services they are offering. Case studies are being used across a number of roles and this includes home birth, vulnerable women and even mental health as well.
They also help those who have been subjected to female genital mutilation as well, and their work often goes unnoticed. The publication also outlines a number of challenges in Scotland and this includes the need for more midwife staffing vacancies, an aging workforce and even the lack of choice for women when it comes to where they actually want to give birth. Midwives are able to make a huge contribution to the sector as it currently stands and the fact that nobody is really able to notice this or give people the support that they need is not acceptable at all. Only time will tell if anything is going to change.
