A report has been issued and it has been distributed by three major thinktanks. They have all stated that there needs to be a radical expansion when it comes to nurse training, and that this needs to be done in an attempt to try and stop the health and care workforce from getting any worse. The measures have been outlined by experts and they have come from the Nuffield Trust as well. Others have come from the King’s Fund, and even the Health Foundation. The report is called Closing the Gap and it highlights the fact that if no decisive action is taken about the workforce then this could cause even more nurse shortages to happen. RCN executive Donna Kinnair has come out to say that the staggering numbers are going to cause some degree of alarm to those who work in a nursing recruitment agency or even in a nurse agency.
Nursing staff are going to be the first people to admit that even though straining is going to happen, patients are going to be compromised by some of these shortages. This is done via a Fund Our Future campaign. It has been led by a group of RCN student members and they are calling for a large and significant investment. The amount they are calling for is at least £1 billion and this is to try and fund higher education. It is their goal to try and get more people to become nurses, and if this happens then it could certainly help with the situation that is happening right now. Donna has stated that it is good to see that the thinktanks are echoing the argument and that the nursing supply cannot increase until new funding is given. This funding should be given to nurses who are postgraduates and undergraduates.
