A UK Covid-19 Enquiry has Begun

People want to know that the country handled the virus well and that the truth has to come out to see if anyone carried out any wrongdoing. The plan is to also find out if anyone is culpable for the disaster. At the end of the day, Britain has over 20 million infections and it also has 166,000 deaths as well. This is the seventh-highest fatality fate across the world. Boris Johnson and all of his ministers have said that they have had a lot of criticism.

The investigators have said that Judge Heather Hallett is leading the silence to pay homage to the victims and that they are trying to remember those who have died. A lot of people say that the country just wasn’t ready to respond to the pandemic and that more should have been done. People are now starting to reflect about what was inevitable and what wasn’t. She has come out to say that the inquiry is not going to drag on for decades and that it is her aim to produce a timely report with a solid recommendation. They want to do this before another disaster comes along. Hugo Keith who is the lead counsel has give a lot of advice to the chair and he has said that an inquiry would be a huge undertaking. He has said that it is going to be divided up into a number of modules and that it is all going to begin with how prepared Britain was as a whole and what can be done to stop history from repeating itself.

The BJCA and the BCS have released a statement saying that they want to try and stamp out bullying, discrimination and harassment. They have said that there is a lot of unprofessionalism in the sector right now and that every cardiology member should try and step up to sort this out. Cultural change has to happen and if it doesn’t then this could mean major issues for the future. They have been endorsed by over 19 organisations who are affiliated with the BCS as well. This comes in the wake of evidence that suggests tha the current behaviours are in fact somewhat common in the sector. Even those who come up through a nurse agency, who work with carers or who are seeking care jobs are going to be impacted. Studies have found that those who have come up through a nursing recruitment agency are also affected and this is not good to say the least. It comes as it would appear that there are a lot of longstanding practice issues that are fuelled by previous training and that there seems to be a lot of unconscious bias. Data from the General Medical Training Survey has said that bullying in the cardiology service is double the average of other medical specialities. Bullying has been associated with poor performance and it also means that medical errors are more likely to happen. You have lost productivity and you also have a level of burnt-out absenteeism.

This is not okay, to say the least and it just goes to show that more has to be done to try and make sure that staff are not affected by this more than they should be, or that their performance doesn’t drop because of outdated views or beliefs.

At the end of the day, racism has a huge effect on patient safety and it can also impact recruitment, workplace retention and more. Some might even go as far to say that it is starving the country and that people are being held back in terms of workplace progression. Yvonne Coghill who was once the director for the NHS Rally has said that when it comes to jeopardising the workplace, right now, this is the biggest risk and that is not good at all. Who knows what the future holds, but right now, it would seem that enough is not being done to support those who truly need it the most.

The boss of a huge social enterprise has said that the NHS bonus has betrayed some people. Andrew Burnell has been the chief executive of the Chief Care Partnership for quite some time and they are a company who provide a number of NHS services. The boss has come out to say that he would have to find £3.7 million in his budget to fund the bonus so he could help his healthcare workers. The government have been facing a lot of pressure when it comes to inequality around the general ineligibility and funding for the NHS pay deal. There are two elements to the deal. You have the consolidated average and you have a 5% pay rise for the year. You also have a one-off bonus which totals £1,655. It has come to light that only the AfC staff that are employed by the NHS directly are actually eligible for the bonus. This is being covered by central funding. This ultimately means that organisations that deliver NHS services and that employ nurses on digital contracts are being denied the bonus. Mr. Burnell has come out to say that right now, he has 1,800 staff working on contracts and a lot of them are community nurses. He has said that the omission from the bonus scheme is going to be rolled out to try and take note of the extra pressure that is being put on staff. This is the result of the pandemic and some believe that it is a bit of a kick in the teeth.
